100 Places Bulgaria
Choose a day in Bulgaria that leaves time to enjoy it. Compare city walks, fortress visits and a monastery day, then explore the places, maps and practical checks behind each plan.
Choose your day in Bulgaria
Compare eight suggested days by time and interest. See what to keep, what to leave for another day and which detail to check first.
Times are editorial allowances, not opening hours. Add travel separately; the Rila plan includes travel from Sofia and is excluded from the local-hour filters. These are not verified step-free routes.
Matching plans: 8
Allow 5–6 hours, including stops
Sofia in one day: a centre-first walking plan
- Make time for
- Cathedral, one museum, a garden break and Ancient Serdica.
- Plan around
- Choose your museum first; work the cathedral stop around worship rather than treating it as a timed attraction.
Allow a full day from Sofia
Rila Monastery from Sofia: plan a day, not a dash
- Make time for
- A monastery day from Sofia, with time for the church and museum.
- Plan around
- Arrange the return journey before setting off. Keep a Seven Rila Lakes hike for a separate day.
Allow 4–5 hours, excluding travel to Plovdiv
Plovdiv Old Town in one day: theatre, a house and time to wander
- Make time for
- Roman Stadium, Ancient Theatre and one Old Town house.
- Plan around
- Keep one house interior rather than several. Allow for cobbled streets and check each venue’s lunch break.
Allow 5–6 hours, excluding intercity travel
Veliko Tarnovo in one day: Tsarevets first, town afterwards
- Make time for
- Tsarevets first, then lunch and Samovodska Charshia if you have energy left.
- Plan around
- This is an outdoor hill visit. Last admission is earlier than closing; an evening show needs a separate plan.
Allow 2–3 hours locally, plus your travel
Belogradchik fortress and rocks: plan the visit before adding Magura
- Make time for
- Kaleto fortress and the surrounding rock landscape.
- Plan around
- The short allowance covers the fortress visit, not travel or Magura Cave. Check the separate cave visit before adding it.
Allow 4–5 hours locally, excluding travel
Nessebar Old Town: two interiors and a walk between them
- Make time for
- Archaeological Museum, St. Stephen’s paintings and St. Sophia’s outdoor remains.
- Plan around
- Confirm the two interiors before buying a combination ticket. A published tariff does not confirm that every church is open.
Allow 4–5 hours in town, plus travel
Koprivshtitsa in one day: choose houses, not a completion target
- Make time for
- Contrast the domestic interior of Lyutova House with Kableshkov’s personal history.
- Plan around
- Choose the houses before choosing a multi-museum ticket; their closed days can change the whole plan.
Allow 3–4 hours in town, excluding travel
Bansko beyond skiing: a town day with two house museums
- Make time for
- Velianova House, Neofit Rilski’s story and an unhurried town break.
- Plan around
- The houses have different closed days and lunch breaks. A town afternoon does not include a Pirin summit or lift outing.
